BUDAPEST, Hungary — SEC Diver of the Year Liam Stone and U.S. national open water champion David Heron lead off Tennessee's contingent this weekend at the 2017 FINA World Championships.Â
The championships run Friday through July 30 with diving and open water competitions leading the way on the schedule. Swimming competition in the pool is next week.Â
Stone is slated for a busy diving schedule for New Zealand. The senior from Auckland is competing in the men's 1-meter, 3-meter, 3-meter synchro and mixed 3-meter synchro. The 1-meter preliminaries begin Friday.Â
Stone set the SEC record on the 1-meter springboard at home and scored a pair of fourth-place finishes on springboard against a high caliber NCAA field. Since the conclusion of the college season, he picked up a silver medal on 3-meter and a bronze in 3-meter synchro at a FINA Grand Prix event in Gatineau, Canada.Â
Tennessee diving coach Dave Parrington has joined the New Zealand staff as a coach for the meet.Â
Heron is competing in his second open water world championship event, having finished sixth in the 5K at the 2015 meet in Kazan, Russia. He won the 5K title at the U.S. trials earlier this summer. The open water races begin Saturday.Â
