July 21, 2017 | Men's Tennis
Tennis player Sunay Bhat and track and field standout Cameron Brown earned NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships after completing their Tennessee careers this spring.Â
Bhat and Brown became the second and third Tennessee student-athletes during the 2016-17 school year to accept the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, which is worth $7,500. Soccer star Hannah Wilkinson was honored with the scholarship in March by the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Committee.Â
The scholarship can be used towards any part-time or full-time study at a university or professional school.Â
Bhat completed his electrical engineering undergraduate degree in May with a 3.91 grade point average. The Knoxville native is a three-time ITA Scholar-Athlete and a three-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll.
On the court, he earned a spot in the lineup for the first time in his career as a senior. He won his first three SEC doubles matches with Srdjan Jakovljevic.
Bhat was Tennessee's male finalist for the SEC McWhorter Postgraduate Award, an honor given to the top senior scholar-athlete in the conference. He served as team captain and was a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for two years. He was also a two-time member of the SEC Community Service Team.
Brown graduated from Tennessee in May with a bachelor's degree in marketing and a 3.64 cumulative GPA. Brown was named a 2015-16 CoSIDA Academic All-American. He also earned CoSIDA Academic All-District 3 honors for both the 2015-16 and the 2016-17 seasons.Â
He completed a distinguished Tennessee career this past spring with a 12th-place finish in the men's hammer throw at the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon. He threw a career-best distance of 68.55 meters (224-11.00) in the final to earn USTFCCCA Second Team All-America honors. That throw was also the second-best in school history.Â
Brown holds the Tennessee record in the men's weight throw with a career-best throw of 23.54 meters (77-2.75), which earned him a third-place finish and USTFCCCA First Team All-America honors at the 2016 NCAA Indoor Championships in Birmingham, Alabama. He is also a two-time SEC Champion (2015, 2016) in the weight throw.
Over the last two years, Tennessee student-athletes have earned $178,250 in postgraduate scholarship awards.Â
