TENNESSEE VOLLEYBALL GETTING SET FOR SEASON
August 10, 2017 | Volleyball
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee volleyball team returned to Rocky Top to get ready for the 2017 campaign this past Monday. The Volunteers have just 15 days before their first regular-season match-up on Aug. 25 in the 2017 Tennessee Classic.
Head coach Rob Patrick enters his 21st year at the helm of the Volunteers and will be looking to record his 400th career win with Tennessee. Assistant coach AJ Bonetti and Director of Operations Kevin Cardoza are both back for their second year on staff, and Patrick has added Wisconsin native and Iowa graduate Nikki Dailey to the staff to work with the setters.
Tennessee finished the 2016 season tied for seventh in the SEC standings, which included a win over top-ranked Kentucky. The Volunteers' 17-14 record marked the 16th winning season for the program under Patrick.
"We are excited about the upcoming season," Patrick said. "We have some great players who are returning for us … they put in some great work for us in the spring."
The 2017 Volunteers are made up of 17 dedicated young ladies with one goal in mind. The team features four seniors (Stephanie Buss, Kanisha Jimenez, Kendra Turner and Mackenzie Cooler), four juniors, four sophomores and five freshmen. Tennessee will return 4+1 starters from the 2016 season, including Erica Treiber, who was named an AVCA Honorable Mention All-American.
Treiber led the Volunteers with a .348 hitting percentage, 261 kills, 21 service aces and 107 blocks last season.
"Treiber, who is jumping higher and is more explosive, has taking to our swing-blocking system that we just put in last year," Patrick said. "She is more comfortable in that system and we expect a lot of big things from her. She has emerged as a great leader for our program."
Tennessee opens the season at home in the Tennessee Classic, when they will welcome Western Michigan, Wofford and George Washington to Thompson-Boling Arena.
Tickets for the Tennessee Classic can be purchased at the Thompson-Boling Arena Ticket Office.
