KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Three players finished the match with double-doubles as the Tennessee volleyball team defeated Western Michigan 3-1 (20-25, 25-22, 25-13, 25-20) in the Vols' home opener Friday night in Thompson-Boling Arena.
Sophomore Alyssa Andreno and freshman Callie Williams recorded their first of what is sure to be many double-doubles this season, while sophomore Sedona Hansen recorded her 11th career double-double for Tennessee.
The Volunteers (1-0) dropped a close opening set 20-25 before taking the second set to tie the match and never looking back. After squeaking out a 25-22 win in the second set, the Vols took control in the third set, taking that frame 25-13.
The fourth set was closer, but the Vols still held on for the win.
"I was very happy with coming out in the first match of the year and getting the win," said head coach Rob Patrick. "I thought our players did a great job of adjusting to what Western Michigan was doing halfway through the second set, which allowed us to be successful and get to the match."
Andreno finished the match with not only a double-double with 11 blocks and 10 kills, but also with a match-high hitting percentage of .444. Aiding her was junior Erica Treiber, who finished the night with 14 kills, 19 points and a .440 hitting percentage.
"Treiber and Andreno really carried the load for use offensively … they did a fantastic job acting the ball all along the net," Patrick said. "Kudos to our setters (Williams and Hansen) for not only finding out middles, but also for the destruction to offense."
Williams finished the match with 13 digs and 15 assists, while Hansen recoded 10 digs and 25 assists.
The Broncos were led by Quianna Ware, who finished with 14 kills and a.306 hitting percentage. Ware also had 14 digs and 36 total attacks on the night.
For the match, Tennessee had a hitting percentage of .194 with 51 kills, 42 assists and 61 digs. The Vols also finished the match with 24 blocks behind Andreno efforts.
Western Michigan (0-1) hit just .116 with 40 kills, 57 digs, 35 assists and just 19 blocks.
Tennessee will play again on Saturday, when the Vols face Wofford at noon in the Tennessee Classic.
