KNOXVILLE, Tenn.
It was a clash of two Top 10 teams on Sunday as the eighth-rated University of Tennessee Lady Volunteer tennis team dealt tenth-ranked North Carolina a 5-2 loss in the Goodfriend Tennis Center. The win marked UT's fifth straight and improves the Orange and White's record to 9-3.
"We will have a lot of tough matches on the road this year, so it was good to wrap this one up at home" Patrick said. "Our doubles teams are playing much better, and really injuries are hurting us at spots. We got solid play all over the lineup today and the bodes well as we head into conference matches."
Tennessee was able to pick up a 1-0 lead by taking the doubles point for the fourth consecutive match when UT's tandem of Alison Ojeda and Crystal Cleveland captured the No. 2 match and Agnes Wiski and Vilmarie Castellvi delivered at No. 1. The 45th-rated pair of Ojeda and Cleveland struck first, by taking an 8-2 triumph from Marlene Mejia and Lee Barios. UT's top tandem soared from No. 45 to No. 19 in newest Omni Hotels Collegiate Tennis Doubles Ranking and Wiski and Castellvi backed that move up by capturing an 8-3 victory over Kate Pinchbeck and Julie Rotondi. On court three, the Orange duo of Kim Gates and Majen Immink fell to No. 22 Kendall Cline and Aniela Mojzis, 8-4, after the Lady Vols went up 1-0 in the match.
In singles action, Ojeda, currently ranked No. 17, dealt Mejia a 6-2, 6-4 loss to extend her team's lead to 2-0. On court two, Castellvi supported her eighth ranking with a win over No. 70 Rotondi. UNC got on the board when an injury forced Immink to withdraw from the No. 5 match in the first set. When the Lady Vol retired she was behind Barios by the score of 4-1. Junior Crystal Cleveland clinched the match for Tennessee when she took a 6-1, 6-1 decision in the sixth slot.
Wiski added the fifth point to the Lady Vols' tally with a comeback 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Mojzis at No. 4. After the match was decided, Gates dropped a 6-7, 6-2, 7-6 decision to Pinchbeck, who has not dropped a contest yet this dual season.
The setback drops the Tar Heels' record to 7-3.
The Lady Vols return to action on Friday when the team opens its Southeastern Conference season at Kentucky. The match is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
