Tennessee head coach Rod Delmonico announced Wednesday that former UT outfielder Clay Greene will be the volunteer assistant coach for the 2003 season. He will have responsibilities with the outfielders and coaching first base during games.
Greene, who played center field for the Vols from 1996-97, served as a part-time coach at Cleveland State Community College this last season as the Cougars finished 25-17-2.
After helping lead the Vols to back-to-back NCAA Regional appearances in 1996 and 1997, Greene spent four seasons in the San Francisco Giants organization after being drafted in the 31st round. He has spent the last two years coaching at the Thunder Baseball School in Knoxville, Tenn.
While at Tennessee, the fleet-footed Greene led the NCAA and set a then school record with 54 stolen bases in 1997. He finished his career with a .318 average, eight home runs and 87 stolen bases which ranks fourth all-time. Greene also reeled off a 14-game hitting streak during his senior campaign, while swiping a Southeastern Conference-record six bases in seven attempts against Middle Tennessee.
The Cleveland, Tenn., native earned his degree in sport management from Tennessee in 2001.
