Tennessee head baseball coach Rod Delmonico announced Thursday that Torry Zerilla has joined the staff as a volunteer assistant coach for the 2006 season. This marks Zerilla's second coaching stint at UT, as he previously served as a volunteer assistant with the Vols in 1997.
"I'm glad to have Torry back associated with Tennessee baseball," Delmonico said. "He's been around the game a long time, and there's no doubt he'll be an asset to our team."
A native of Winter Haven, Fla., Zerilla played collegiate baseball as an infielder at Youngstown State from 1990-92 and was selected by the Colorado Rockies in the 50th round of the 1992 MLB amateur entry draft. After his first professional season he suffered an injury that cut short his playing career.
Zerilla's first full-time college coaching experience came at UNC Asheville from 2000-02. He then worked as an assistant coach at Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tenn., from 2003-05. His responsibilities with both the Bulldogs and the Railsplitters included coordination of recruiting efforts and development of hitter and infielders.
In addition to college coaching, Zerilla's other baseball experience includes time spent as director of baseball operations at Champions Baseball Academy in Louisville, Ky. (2002-03), director of facilities at Youngstown Class "B" Inc., in Youngstown, Ohio (1998-2000), a scout for the Cleveland Indians organization (1999-2000) and director of operations at Thunder Baseball School in Knoxville in 1995.
Recognizing the importance of education, Zerilla returned to school during his time at LMU and is slated to receive his bachelor's degree in Science kinesiology this December.
Zerilla is married to the former Anya Myers, and the couple has a two-year-old daughter, Abriana Jane.
