18th Windon Memorial Classic Preview
September 17, 2014 | Men's Golf
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - On Sunday, the Tennessee men's golf team will be teeing off at the two-day 18th Windon Memorial Classic, which is hosted by Northwestern University and is played at Evanston Golf Club in Skokie, Ill.
The tournament boasts a rich history of participants going on to have successful professional careers. In 1995, the Windon Memorial saw a young Tiger Woods finish as runner-up. Hunter Mahan, who recently won The Barclays, was crowned the individual champion in 2000.
The 18th Windon Memorial Classic features five top-100 teams from the Golfweek.com Division 1 Poll which was released on September 15th.
Tennessee last competed in the Windon Memorial Classic during the 2012 season. The Vols finished tied for 5th out of a 15-team field that included six teams from this year's tournament. Coach Jim Kelson saw solid performances from now-senior Thomas Dunne and now-junior Michael Nagy. Dunne finished tied for 15th (+9) and Nagy, a freshman at the time, finished tied for 23rd (+12).
This time around, Coach Kelson will start sophomore Jack Smith, freshman Lorenzo Scalise, junior Michael Nagy, junior Chad Merzbacher, and senior Thomas Dunne.
The Volunteers head into their second tournament of the 2014-15 season led by Merzbacher, who was the team's highest finisher in Tennessee's first fall tournament appearance. The junior posted a score of 1-over par, which was good enough for a tie for 29th place at the Carpet Capital Collegiate.
The format will consist of five-man teams, with the best four scores counting toward the daily total. Play will be in threesomes with tee times each day. Tennessee opens play Sunday, alongside California and Northwestern at 9:15 a.m. ET.
